The BeanBudget story
I built the coffee tool I needed at the grinder.
BeanBudget grew from a familiar home-barista frustration through plenty of experimenting, listening, and learning what makes a coffee tool useful every day.
01
The frustration
Great coffee at the café. Mediocre coffee at home.
I'm a coffee enthusiast in Malaysia who has “invested” far too much in a home setup. Yet I could never reliably recreate the cups I loved in cafés.
I'd watch my 27th James Hoffmann video, feel a surge of confidence, then pull five shots in a row and accept the lingering taste of mediocrity — wasting a painful amount of beans along the way.
Why could I taste that a shot was wrong, but not know what to change next?
02 — Experiment and learn
Build, brew, listen, repeat.
Every failed shot was also 18 grams of a bag I'd paid good money for — a rough week of dialing in could eat half of it. The name is literal: BeanBudget started as my attempt to stop pouring the bean budget down the drain.
It grew from exploring how video, taste, and recipe data could work together to make espresso advice more useful. Every version taught us more about the moments when home baristas need a nudge — and the moments when they simply need a dependable memory.
The pattern became clear: logging has to feel effortless, while coaching should be ready when a tricky bag calls for another pair of eyes.

03
The focus
A daily journal that makes every bag more useful.
BeanBudget now puts the daily journal first: the last grind setting, the recipe that worked, how the shot tasted, and what is left in the bag — ready at the machine when it matters.
Our focus is simple: help coffee enthusiasts make better coffee with less waste, one remembered shot at a time. When extra help is useful, Beanard can assess a shot or guide a multi-shot dial-in.
Journal first, coach when you want one
BeanBudget remembers the work you already did.
Log a shot in seconds. Find the answer at the machine tomorrow. And when a new bag refuses to cooperate, ask Beanard for a shot assessment or bring him into a guided dial-in.
